Australian government dumbs down smart card

Yes, I'm back and, in fact, I never went away. Its just that my blogging experience from 2005 was under-whelming. No-one reading my blogs and no point.

Even so, I'll try again in 2007 now that blogging is better understood. And what better topic to blog about than the Australian government's smart card. (i.e. Joe Hockey's Access card).

I see from this morning's press that the director of the Office of the Access Card, Marie Johnson (?spelling) has told the AFR that the government will only be buying "off-the-shelf" solutions.

No new technologies in other words. To ensure that the 2008 start-date can be achieved, Marie says there will be no bleeding edge stuff bought as a result of the recently issued tender.

So where the tender called for innovative new approaches, just ignore that.

There is no way this card will be wireless or anything else that could be close to the edge of development.
